Cardinal Langley 1 66 Canute 1 60
Canute 1 played their traditional season opener against Cardinal Langley 1 away. Langley got off to a good start and opened up an early 13 point lead before Canute pulled it back to 8 points by the end of the quarter. Langley continued to have the better of the second quarter, holding a comfortable lead 44-31 at the half. Canute were not about to give up and had a 10-0 run early in the third only to be answered with a 7-0 run from Langley, leaving them 9 up at the end of the quarter. Canute continued close the gap and it was down to 4 with 2 minutes left but Langley hung on to win it. It was an enjoyable game played in a good spirit and well officiated. With a new coach in place and new plays still bedding in it's looking like an interesting season lies ahead.

Week 3 Canute 2 85 - Cardinal Langley 3 68
A high scoring thriller saw canute come through despite the absence of captain Phil Rickett who no doubt would have remained vocal throughout given the quality on display. Canute started fast off the blocks with Rob Park showing the benefits of missing training by nailing the first four points from the charity stripe. Great passing between the twin towers Leary and Halliwell saw Andy L score from close range and an early 6-0 lead. Langley responded with a 2+1 before a scrappy period of play saw both sides go scoreless for a couple of minutes. Langley pressed and Canute despite breaking through missed a couple of lay-up chaces. The introduction of Sean lamont was rewarded with an immediate coast to coast break and lay-up with one to add from the line (a recurring theme given the frequency of calls throughout the night. Andrew Halliwell picked up the first of several baskets of an offensive rebound and Rob and Sean benefitted from the early introduction of Ivan Robles as Canute pressured the ball in a 2-3 zone. Langley chipped away but missed several free throws to allow canute to pull away. Alp Bayton joined the scorers soon after coming on again from an offensive rebound and left hand put back. Sean lead the break and Andy leary piled on the pressure inside as the gap opened up to 26-9. An Ivan steal and lay-up and a two from Boran saw canute into the first quarter break 30-14 to the good and 7 different players already on the scoresheet.
Second quarter saw the re-introduction of Brian Ross to the fold. An uncharacteristic miss from the top of the key was followed by a quarter full of strong driving and good ball movement. ged ratchford really settled the team down when the early lead descended into a period of complacency. Canute scored only 5 points in the first 4 minutes aschanges were made and the 2-3 became a 2-1-2 and subsequently became man-to-man. Langley kept their score ticking over partly due to good ball movement and partly due to the Canute desire to continue to concede to many cheap fouls. 5 points from the line and back to back threes from Brian and Hardwick forLangley saw the lead cut to 37-27. With Brian making a two and 2 of 4 from the line this edged out to 41-27. The rest of the quarter saw both teams in team fouls and the quarter played out with Langley making 7 from 8 from the line and Canute making 3 point plays via both Rob park and Andy Leary and a further 2 from 2 from Andy to end the half at 53-40.
A good start to the third saw Andy L score a two inside then Boran and Sean Lamont both hitting from beyond the 3point arc. Andy kept chipping away insideas both sides scored evenly in a quarter just edged by Canute at 19 points to 16. Canute were from 10 at the line in another quarter in which both teams gave away easy fouls and ended up in 4 team penalty early on. With the lead at 72-52 Canute allowed langley to score the last 4 points of the quarter to give themselves a chance.
The last quarter saw Boran, Sean and Rob lead from the front and Colin Johnson pulling down aquick half dozen rebounds as Canute went with a smaller line up. A jittery first few minutes saw the gap narrowas langley scored the first six points of the quarter to cap an overall 10-0 run. canute responded with a 10-0 run of their own with Colin nailing a baseline three and Sean very casually hitting another. Langley tried to mount another charge and a superb three from Hardwick was followed by three from the line as Boran caught the Langley player and he made all three from the line. 84-68 at this stage but only 1:40 to play. The game finished as much of it had been played with Sean making 1 from 2 from the line and Colin missing the final 2 free throws of the night. Final score 85-68. Another good win for Canute. Foul count was Canute 18 Langley 23. Free throw count Canute 19/29 Langley 20/27. 3 point shots Canute 5 Langley 4
Week 2 Canute II 54 West Leigh 39
Canute kept up the winning momentum with a strong performance against a committed West Leigh side.
Andy Leary won the tip but after some slick passing to work a good open shot Canute failed to take advantage. The visitors opened the scoring with two from inside the paint as Canute were slow to work out their man to man assignments. Canute struggled to get shots to drop despite working some good opening. However Canute's inside strength saw the visitors scoring similarly restricted. Andy Leary opened his account with an at the third attempt shot from inside against strong pressure before John Park hit the first of back to back threes. The visitors ticked over with shots from the line as first John Park and then Phil Rickett picked up early fouls. At least the men-in-grey (MIGs) were calling the fouls. Inside Moone for the opposition caused a few problems with a combination of strong base line drives and determined inside play. A 10-4 Canute lead was reduced to 10-9 helped by further shots from the line. Rob Park and Ged Ratchford controlled the offence after Phil picked up a second foul. Andy L made a 2 but missed the and-1 bonus. A good spell for West Leigh saw Nevin hit 2, then Shackleton add 2 more. A turnover and foul put Shackleton on the line but he missed both. Colin Johnson then hit the first of many for Canute to level the scores at 13-13. A srong move from Andy L saw Canute edge out the first quarter 15-13 helped by West Leigh making just 3 of 10 from the line.
Canute started the second quarter in style with a 2 and a made and-1 from Andy L, then Colin began to heat up. A power drive and a spinning fade away
jump shot helped Canute out to a 22-13 lead. With Canute in a solid zone West Leigh were held to long range and Canute secured the rebounds. Three minutes in WL hit their first shot. Then Boran got his shooting boots back on and hit a three to take the lead to 10 points. The sides traded basket for the rest of the quarter with Colin taking his tally to 10 via a one v one showcase. Alp Bayton played strong at both ends picking up some tough boards and steals on D and finishing the quarter with a 2 to take canute into the break at 33-25. An 18-12 quarter with still a lot to play for.
In the third quarter Canute took over. An early lay-up for WL was their only score in the firt four minutes. The introduction of the speed of Ivan Robles proved the game changing substitute. With Ivan and Boran at the top in the zone the number of steals began to increase. The team started to move the ball and run the plays as a unit. Great ball movment saw the first of Borans shots from downtown. He then hit a three from the corner which could have interfered with the current NASA moon probe. After Ivan stole the ball and went coast to coast Boran followed this up with another 3 from the top. Andy Halliwell returned from the bench to keep the score moving inside. WL were held to just 4 points in the quarter which ended with the score 45-29.
With Andy H taking a rest Mark Luscombe made an important contribution to the win, passing with intelligence and hustling on the boards against sizeable opponents. Four points without reply saw Canute open up a 20 point lead at 49-29. West Leigh then pressed as Canute made changes. WL had a mini run as they began to shoot from range and made two from distance interspersed with a steal and lay-up. Canute controlled the ball although a couple of passes went astray to keep coach Price's blood pressure high. Calm was restored with John Park, Rob and Boran keeping the scorers busy until the whistle.
(scoring based on scoresheet which was done by Dave Chilton so don't think any threes were missed)

Playing without Club Captain Phil Rickett the season began with a fired up Canute eager to put behind them the struggles of last season. With the benefit of the squad training throughout the summer at Egerton Youth Club the relatively newgroup of players began in some style. A very rusty first quarter saw the visitors take an early lead. In the early stages centre Andy Leary (one of the few players unable to train consistently through the summer) struggled to retain the ball in the low post position. These early stumbles helped Cardinal Langley to leads of 4-0 and 11-7. The early scoring for Canute came from John Park until after 5 minutes the rust started to fall from Andy's hands and he fired in 3 successive baskets from inside the paint. Both sides showed early season rust and traded baskets. Colin Johnson battled inside in support of Andy and played solid at the other end of court. With less than 30 seconds left in the first quarter and canute trailing 13-11 a time out was called by coach Price to steady the ship. The play was set up and good ball reversal worked the open 3 for Boran Gazi to calmly drill his first 3 pointer of the night. In at the quarter 14-13 up and starting to show signs of gelling as a team.
The team came out for the second quarter in a twin towers formation with Andy Leary and Andrew Halliwell playing together competitively for the first time. The rebounding strength and passing ability of both started to pay off as both players fed each other in the paint. Although with two Andy's on court the frequent advice to Andy to pick up Langley number 15 led to some confusion in the man-to-man defence.
With the Langley defence collapsing inside to handle the twin threat of Andy and Andrew this left Boran Gazi to roam the perimeter and slot home 4 shots from beyond the 3 point arc - at this stage taking 5 three point shots without a miss. Sean Lamont kept the ball moving and chipped in with a trademark drive and hook lay-up and John Park, Ged Ratchford and Rob Park played agressive defence to shut the Langley guards down. With a gap opening up Canute went into the break leading 34-22.
At the start of the second half Ivan Robles and Mark Luscombe joined the fray. The speed of Ivan caused problems for Canute as the older legs on court now had to keep up with him. Ivan's on court sensibility kept him doing sensible things and the team continued to prosper. back playing man-to-man D with both Andy's rotating with Colin and Mark to great effect. Ivan hit a 3 from the corner early in the quarter and a further 3 from Ged Ratchford (banked off the glass and erroneously given to Ivan on the scoresheet) and another long 2 (or maybe a 3 not given) from Ged showed that anything Boran could do the rest could match. A brief Langley rally narrowed the gap to 44-30 but Canute consolidated the position with fast breaks and some easy lay-ups starting to feature. Into the break with Canute leading 49-31.
The fourth quarter began with Boran back on court and starting where he left off with an early long 3. This was followed immediately with Colin Johnson finnaly taking the coaches advice of squaring up to shoot and hitting an even longer 3. Sean Lomont then took over with three lighning quick breaks and lay-ups as Langley tired. 49-31 had become 61-33. Boran finally missed a shot and was benched for the indiscretion. Sean continued his mission scoring 10 points in the quarter with the speed of Ivan in support. The game ended in fitting style with Boran hitting another 3 and Sean completing one final fast break. Let us hope Phil can help us maintain this fine start next week. In Phil's honour the time honoured celebratory chant of Canuuuuuutttteeeee!!!! was put through it's paces at the final whistle.
Final score Canute 70 - Cardinal Langley 45.
2009-10 First Team
Canute 1 have had a good January and gone 3 and 1, beating Burnley and MMU in the process. The addition of Tim supplementing the squad from the second team and the return of Stuart Hindle have been key, providing more experience and allowing the team to rotate the guards. Match reports to follow.
Match Report, Canute 1 72 Trafford 58
Canute 1 put out their strongest team so far this season against Trafford, 9 players including the addition for two experienced guards to strengthen their young and energetic back court. In previous weeks they have played with between 5 and 7 players and have run out of steam or had foul trouble in the second half of games.
Trafford started well hitting outside shots and scoring easy points inside to take a deserved 29-15 lead after the 1st quarter. Canute stepped up their defence and started scoring to win the next 2 quarters and leave the game finely balanced going into the final quarter.
Canute dominated the final quarter, rotating fresh players to finish strongly and win the game 72-58.
This was the first win of the season and a great way to start the new year, if they remain at full strength and play to their potential more games will be won in the second half of the season.

BASKETBALL action this week saw Canute reverse a lacklustre loss against the Mountain Men of High Pe
From the Guardian Series, first published Wednesday 23rd Oct 1996.
While the victory owed much to Victor Scott's dominance under the boards, Wilkinson's shooting and Phil Ricketts' orchestration from point guard; it was the teamwork which, although faltering at times, did come together especially in defence and was instrumental in the victory.
Scott's masterly dunk in the final seconds and Harding's 15 foot jumper on the buzzer put the Atlas firmly in their place.
The next home game is Tuesday, October 22 in the cup.
Wilkinson 27, Scott 15, Harding 12, Heissenbuttel 11.
