Thornleigh 41:81 Canute 2

With the exception of the second quarter, Canute 2 dominated this game as reflected by the 40 point win.  This was a decent team performance by the away side without really hitting the standard set by the first half performance versus Fylde (a game Canute ultimately lost).  Canute 2 started well, with Ivan Robles quickly finding his range with a couple of long twos and a triple.  All of the starting 5 were on the board before the end of the quarter, but special mention goes to the in-form Colin Johnson and Phil Rickett who shared 15 first quarter points between them.

Canute 2 started the second quarter with a 27 to 6 point lead, but it was Thornleigh who fought back to win the quarter by 2, with G Strong and P Tresaden sharing all but 2 of the points.  Canute 2 upped the tempo at both ends of the court to take the third 20 points to 8.  The points were again shared but Phil Rickett was in particularly forceful form, combining well with Rob Park for several scores off penetrating trails.  At one point, this included 8 unanswered points between them.  Canute 2 will be hoping for more of this from their captain over the tougher assignments to come. The away side maintained their dominance into the fourth with points from Boran Gazi, Mark Luscombe and Ged Ratchford wrapping up a comfortable win.

Canute 2 67:78 Fylde

This was a match controlled by Canute 2 for almost 3 quarters before a rampant Fylde side upped the tempo in the last 15 minutes to win by 11, thanks in no small part to 18 second half points from M. Sewell.

Fylde were quickly into their stride from the tip, taking an early 6 point lead.  But it was Canute that took control with 11 unanswered points thanks to some of the best offence seen from the home side in some time.   Though lacking in height and numbers, Canute put in some excellent team play, and in Colin Johnson they had the outstanding player of the first quarter with 9 points from both in and out of the paint.  Boran Gazi took up the mantle in the second quarter, with strong drives and expert finishing reaping 11 points.  Fylde hung in the match though thanks to a considerable size advantage inside and ended the first half with only a 7 point deficit.  The third quarter started even enough but the tide turned when Fylde switched to a full court press.  Canute’s composed play disintegrated and by the time they had recovered, Sewell had changed the course of the match with some outstanding shooting.

Stockport Atlas 65 - Canute II 45

The first game of the season against an Atlas side who’d added several young players over the summer to their experienced squad was always going to be tough, especially with Canute’s lack of height in their 8 man squad. Canute got of to a difficult start and didn’t manage to get on the score board until the 8 minute. The score at the end of the quarter was 2 – 13 to Atlas.

In the second quarter Canute’s offensive movement started to create open shots while Atlas were struggling to keep up their scoring rate. Towards the end of the quarter we managed to get to within 5 points without really seeming to have got going fully. Stockport pulled away again towards the end of the quarter, however scoring throughout the quarter was even with each team scoring 17.

As the third quarter drew to a close Atlas starting capitalising on their height advantage inside. They also used a zone press which forced several turnovers. These two factors meant that Atlas went in at the end of the 3 with a 49-29 lead. In the final quarter Canute could not make any inroads into the Atlas lead which remained 20 points at the end of the game.

On the positive side in the 2 and 4 quarters we scored equal points with an Atlas team who look like they’ll win more games than they loose this season. There were also patches when all the team moved the ball well creating open chances for each other. However a lack of height meant that we struggled to take rebounds at both ends of the court meaning we had very few second chance baskets. We also need to work on getting the ball up court when teams are pressing us, as teams in the 1 division are less likely to let us walk up the court unopposed.
